The Perks Of A Jeepney Ride

The Jeepney, originally made from U.S. military jeeps left over from World War II is the most popular means of public transportation in the Philippines. It is specifically used for commuting through short distance travels, more or less around 30 kilometers or so. The number of passengers it can carry primarily depends on its length. As for the main parts of the Jeepney, its quite a simple explanation, there’s the driver;

And of course, the source of income, the passengers;

For each ride, Filipinos may experience such of the following perks, some good and not so good times but generally, they are all part of the colorful way to commute around. 

Lets start from the beginning, a commuter must first look for a proper terminal or a proper sidewalk(sometimes anywhere) to wait for the Jeepney. 

-The commuter will fall in line approaching the designated Jeepney to board. This shows some discipline. Whether he/she likes it or not, each must follow the line unless they’d prefer walking. 

-The commuter must then prepare the payment accordingly to their destination. For this, being honest  comes into action. This goes both ways for the passenger as well for the driver because the most common way to pay the fare is to manually hand the amount towards the driver. The driver’s task is to ensure the correct change.

– If you are in that rear end position, you should be humble enough and request from other passengers to hand in your payment. In return, they’ll show some courteousness to pass along the payment, especially coming from the far end of the Jeepney. 

– If you happen to travel with a friend, being polite by discreetly talking to each other is also expected. Laughing too hard or talking too loudly isn’t really a good manner inside a Jeepney. 

– Along the way, if by chance an elderly or a person with disability happens to be a passenger, everyone is expected to show full cooperation and respect to their needs accordingly such as proper space and comfort.

– If someone calls out for their stop, once again, passengers nearest to the driver must be kind enough to tell the driver.

– If its your turn to depart, it goes best to be very gentle and take good care of your steps on your way out so that you’ll not bump knee to knee or hurt other passengers as you go out.

 

Here are some fun facts:

– Every Filipino who knows the culture of riding a Jeepney knows the everyday “miracle” behind a normal 16 seater vehicle that astoundingly becomes a 20 seater.

– In some remote areas, Jeepneys are considered the only means of transport absent bus. People there have already developed a custom to completely overload the vehicle up to the roof. Yeah, the roof. Dangerous enough but hell, we are Filipinos. Broom broom! 😀

The Filipinos And The Ice Bucket Challenge

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS, is a disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. A-myo-trophic is from the Greek language that means “no muscle nourishment” — “A” means no or negative, “myo” means muscle, and “trophic” means nourishment. “Lateral” refers to the areas in the spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located. As the lateral degenerates, it leads to scarring or hardening (or sclerosis) in the affected part.

As for the Ice Bucket Challenge, it was an idea that came from some studies in which hypothesize that the feeling of ice-cold water over the body is said to be similar to the numbing effect of ALS.

With the help of the powerful media, its a no brainer that Filipinos would also step up and perform the said challenge. But, does it make any sense to us? To my fellow countrymen who did it, are you fully aware of the cause? Most importantly, did you manage to donate or simply nominated? Manila Mayor Erap Estrada openly said in an interview that if we really want to help someone, let us not create a show out of it. Big point there! Yeah, there’s nothing wrong about doing it. We have our dear friend democracy to back us up. But still, I think that it doesn’t really concern us to a further extent. We tend to over react at most occasions by trying to sensationalize our so called intention to help, either spread awareness, donate an amount or just demand attention.

Our country faces several issues much worse and a lot closer to reality that demands way more attention and awareness. How about creating a challenge to spread awareness on how to end poverty? How about the issue of better education? How about the problem with unemployment, health care, over population, calamity control, the rotten government?… You name it…

HOW ABOUT WE CHALLENGE OURSELVES TO BECOME BETTER FILIPINOS?

Its free, no ice, buckets, assistants or even a video camera needed. Also, we are all automatically nominated. Ain’t it a challenge worth accepting? I firmly believe that the fruit of hardwork to do that kind of a challenge would bear great results and even develop our culture to all aspects possible.

Again, we perform well when it comes to the blaming game. But how about giving a chance to redeem ourselves for the sake of the younger generation?

We always say that our spirit is unbreakable. But why does it hesitate when we talk about trying to better ourselves and our country?

I, for one, will never lose hope as a Filipino. Its hard, but it is part of the process. Short cut was never a choice.

An Open Letter To All Major Supermarkets And Grocery Stores

Payday! Another fine day to run errands, buy goodies and other stuff. I was very eager to efficiently roam the supermarket and gather all the items on my list to finish as early as possible like it was some sort of a time pressured game. Then, there I was, all lined up, waiting patiently just like all the other customers. After a few dragging minutes, finally, its my turn! As the cashier monotonously scan the goodies in my basket, suddenly her face becomes rather curious and puzzled. She gently tries to re-scan the current item on hand as if something was wrong. After a few more unsuccessful attempts, she then calls out for help and reaches to the nearest staff to request for a new product of the same item. As for me, I simply thought its just a bar code scan failure. Things like that commonly happen, so, its ok, manageable and understandable. The staff then comes back with the new product, gives it to the cashier to scan again but still unable to process the item. Cautiously, the other customers behind me notice the situation and builds up more curiosity pulling me to a certain awkward moment. The cashier then declares and tells me with a hint of insincerity that the product I’d like to purchase reflects to their system that it was “Item Not Found”.

Without telling me directly, it simply implies that I cannot purchase that product because it is not yet in their system though the said product is attractively being advertised inside their premises. Therefore, what the hell?! Is it my fault or the other customers? Do we have to suffer such wasted time just to hear the line “Sorry, you might want to choose another product”? Needless to say, we go and buy goods to such big supermarkets to enjoy several perks. 

Now, I’d like you to imagine a full scale supermarket with tons of different products all around. Then, you’d get to pick one random item that would pop up as “Item Not Found” in their system while paying. What would you feel? Are just lucky or what?!

 

So, I am trying to write this to ask some questions and hoping to suggest some fun solutions.

I’d like to ask:

– Is it difficult to input items on the system?

– How long does it take for the system to recognize the new product inputs?

– Do they even check if everything is actually ready for selling?

– How often do they update the product list and codes?

 

Then I’d like to suggest:

– If a customer picks up a product with the “Item Not Found” status, that customer should be awarded with that product for free or;

– The supermarket could give a lucky certificate containing some GC’s to win the customer’s satisfaction and guarantee a repeat transaction or;

– The supermarket or establishment could just simply polish their system so that we, the customers would not experience such troubles and continue to be loyal with them. Is it that difficult?
